About Bridal Gowns - Glossary of Terms
- A-Line - A wedding gown that is very fitted at the top or bodice and then it slightly flares from the waist or hips down. This is a sleek style that usually complements most figures.
- Applique - A decorative fabric or lace design that is cutout and then applied to another fabric, veil or shoes. This can be sequined, lace, or any other material.
- Ball Gown - A wedding gown that has a fitted bodice and then flares to a full skirt. The length of the skirt brushes the ground.
- Basque - A wedding gown with a fitted bodice that has a waistline that comes to a point in the front to below the waistline. This is a slimming and elongating style for most women.
- Bell Sleeve - A sleeve on a wedding gown that is more fitted between the shoulder and elbow and then flares between the elbow and wrist.
- Bustle - When the train of a wedding gown is gathered to create a beautiful pleated back of the dress. This is usually done for the reception to keep the train of the wedding dress off the floor.
- Cap Sleeve - A short rounded sleeve that barely covers the shoulder.
- Cathedral Train - An extremely long train that is usually removed during the wedding reception.
- Chapel Train - A wedding gown train that extends about 4 feet from the waist.
- Detachable Train - A wedding gown train that can be removed from the bridal dress.
- Empire Waist - A wedding dress that has a very high waistline that falls directly below the bust. This is a flattering style for most women.
- Gauntlet - A fitted glove that fits over the hand, and comes to a point over the back of the hand. The sleeve usually comes up to the elbow or just below.
- Halter Neckline - A bridal dress neckline that has straps that come from the front and connect behind the neck in the back.
- Illusion - An ultra sheer fabric that usually covers the sleeves or neckline.
- Juliet Cap - A small round cap that usually has a small piece of tulle or lace that partially covers the bride’s face.
- Mermaid Style - A wedding gown that is fitted from the bodice to the knee and then flares out from the knee.
- Natural Waist - A wedding dress that’s waist falls naturally at the bride’s waistline.
- Pill Box Hat - A small hat that is worn at the top of the head.
- Portrait Neckline - A flattering neckline that sits just off the shoulder to expose the collarbones.
- Princess Waist - A slimming style that has vertical seams from the top of the dress to the hem.
- Russian Tulle - Tulle with wide holes (sometimes larger squares). Of this is used with Pill Box or Juliet Cap headpieces.
- Scoop Neckline - A flattering U-Shape neckline.
- Sheath - A form fitting wedding gown from top to bottom. Very flattering to many brides.
- Strapless Gown - A modern and fashionable style for many brides.
- Tank Style Bodice - A fitted sleeveless bodice that is usually simple but beautiful.
